Rule 1: 1. Abstract nouns in ـِيَّة
Add the feminine ending ة to a nisba adjective and you get an abstract noun naming the quality or the system: حُرٌّ free, حُرِّيٌّ (of) freedom, حُرِّيَّةٌ freedom; إِنْسَانٌ human being, إِنْسَانِيَّةٌ humanity; مَسْؤُولٌ responsible, مَسْؤُولِيَّةٌ responsibility; شَخْصٌ person, شَخْصِيَّةٌ personality; أُمِّيٌّ illiterate, أُمِّيَّةٌ illiteracy. The suffix also attaches to elatives (أَهَمِّيَّةٌ importance, أَكْثَرِيَّةٌ majority, أَقَلِّيَّةٌ minority) and to particles (كَيْفِيَّةٌ manner, كَمِّيَّةٌ quantity). The plural is ـِيَّاتٌ: جَمْعِيَّاتٌ societies, مَسْؤُولِيَّاتٌ responsibilities.
