Rule 1: 1. Nouns of place: مَفْعَل and مَفْعِل
Prefix مَـ to the three radicals. The second radical takes i when the imperfect of the verb has i (يَجْلِسُ gives مَجْلِسٌ council, sitting-room; يَنْزِلُ gives مَنْزِلٌ house), and a otherwise (يَكْتُبُ gives مَكْتَبٌ office, desk; يَدْخُلُ gives مَدْخَلٌ entrance; يَلْعَبُ gives مَلْعَبٌ playground; يَخْزُنُ gives مَخْزَنٌ storeroom). Assimilated verbs always take i and keep their و: مَوْقِفٌ stopping place, مَوْضِعٌ place, مَوْعِدٌ. Hollow roots give مَكَانٌ, مَطَارٌ, مَقَامٌ. Many nouns of place add ة: مَدْرَسَةٌ, مَكْتَبَةٌ library, bookshop, مَحْكَمَةٌ, مَزْرَعَةٌ farm, مَقْبَرَةٌ cemetery. The usual plural is مَفَاعِلُ, a diptote: مَنَازِلُ, مَكَاتِبُ, مَدَارِسُ; some nouns in ة also take ـَاتٌ (مَكْتَبَاتٌ). مَسْجِدٌ is a well-known exception, with i although the verb is يَسْجُدُ.
